Eating out is really hard but can also be pretty easy when you know what to look for and what to not look for. A lot of surfers I know and us included love eating out at different cafes and restaurants especially when getting out of a surf session. A lot of us love trying out new places almost as much as we love returning to their old favorite spots that has our favorite food. People love trying new menu items and discovering new ways to eat the foods they enjoy the most. Eating at restaurants can be both a wonderful and very dangerous thing for your health and surf training journey.
When eating out always pick the healthiest option out there; ask for sauce on the side and dip your fork in it. if you want to have alcohol, one beer or one shot is the best as it is not mixed up for all sugar drinks. And then keeping it simple is the best solution to get the most out of your meal out. All of the things on the menu might look good, but is it really actually good for you? Think about that when ordering.

Benefits of eating out
One of the greatest things about going out is that it saves time that many busy people and surfers after a surf session do not have to waste. After spending long hours at our workplaces, oceans, and gyms, few people have the time or energy to return home and cook a gourmet meal that they will actually enjoy. Eating out seems to be a great solution at the end of a long, tiring day. It is easy when eating out cause there is nothing much to think about, and is very enjoyable and rewarding especially when starving.
Eating out can also be great because we can try a wide variety of foods and drinks that we don’t have the ability to make ourselves. No one loves eating the same basic foods over and over again, so eating out can be a good way to give our tastebuds something new.
Disadvantages of eating out
On the other hand if we are not being careful, eating out can also be dangerous for a couple of big reasons. It all comes down to portion sizes, sauces, drinks, and types of foods provided.
First, we must use caution in eating out for the sake of our health. Most restaurants and cafes offer huge portions of items that are unhealthy to eat and drink. Eating out often means filling up on appetizers, a main course, a few high calorie beverages, and a dessert to finish off the evening. In America, we also get free refills, which makes it even harder and unhealthier to keep a steady diet and stick to the plan.
Think about how many calories you can consume during a meal like this. I am not, of course, saying that we should never enjoy eating out. We always have our clients get one cheat MEAL per week; not an entire day! Just one meal that you can eat whatever you want and it will reset your metabolism.
I am, however, saying that we need to be careful, for our health’s sake, about eating out too frequently. We must be careful to watch our choices when we are eating out. Choose healthier items or commit to only eating half of the meal you choose. There are ways of eating out healthy, it just takes conscience effort.
So instead of having the crazy pasta with all the sauces and oils; ask for sauce on the side and no oil. The dip your fork in the sauce and take a bite, don’t drizzle the entire thing on your plate.
Instead of having a margarita, have a straight shot of alcohol or one beer.
Instead of having an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Just have an entree and if you need to half of a dessert.
Instead of eating the entire meal (that you could technically share with another person), only eat half and take the rest home for the next day. Saves you money and time!
Another disadvantage of eating out
Another huge reason to be careful about eating out too often is your pocketbook and budget. It is no secret that eating out costs more, on average, that cooking meals in your own home. It is easy to accumulate large bills, especially at nicer places. So be careful that you stick to a budget when you make plans for eating out.
A great way to make sure you are not going over budget and not always eating out is by setting a certain meal. For example every Friday night, you will go out and have a nice meal. That is the only day that you will do that no others! It’s a great way to motivate you to eat really great all week and a great way to save money as well. It keeps yourself accountable when you follow it!
Beware. Eating out can be one of the greatest pleasures or one of the most dangerous things. It is a lot of fun but we just have to watch our back. Also when you are always eating at home all the healthy meals that you cook; when you DO go out and not eat the healthiest thing, your body will notice and will let you know that it does not like it as much.
Take these tips and apply them, you will see a big difference! Enjoy it, but do it with caution, just remember that!
